Electron Microscopy Technologist (Research, biological samples), Fontana, CA The Electron Microscopy Technologist (Electron Microscopist) is a professional member of the research laboratory staff who works independently with minimal oversight from direct supervisory personnel. A vast majority of the technician--s time is spent performing routine and complex electron microscopic and related microscopic procedures requiring knowledge of advanced scientific principles, technical skills and well-developed problem solving capabilities. Duties include general support functions necessary for the routine operation of the microscopy laboratory. Perform all job duties with sensitivity and attention to the sample population(s) being served. Experience: Bachelor's degree in Biology or related field with experience in electron microscopy preferred. A minimum of two (2) years of specialized EM experience with biological samples plus an Associate's degree in electron microscopy is considered equivalent to a Bachelor's degree for this position. License/Certification/Registration Requirements: Specialty certification in electron microscopy technology is preferred, but not required. Job Duties and Responsibilities: Manage sample priority for the EM / Microscopy core lab. Perform SEM and STEM biological sample preparation techniques (fixation, embedding, sectioning, staining, dehydration, drying, coating, etc.). Operate the sample preparatory equipment (critical point dryer, ultramicrotome, sputter coater, freeze fracture, microwave, glow discharge, etc.). Operate the SEM to produce high quality digital images of biological research samples. Maintain the EM instrumentation through troubleshooting and performing or coordinating maintenance, service and repair tasks (performing alignments, calibrations, performance checks, etc.). Maintain the laboratory in an organized, clean manner; purchase supplies, stock supplies; make solutions; dispose of chemical waste; etc. Maintain lab records (including ordering, equipment records and data archiving). Maintain a safe operating environment in the lab. Provide training to other personnel in the use of microscopy and specimen processing equipment and in the performance of specialized procedures, techniques, etc. Keep skills and training current on all microscopy requirements. Keep abreast of new developments in the field through journal publications and seminars. Prepare figures for publications. Job Requirements/Preferences: Certification as an MSA Electron Microscopy Technologist preferred. Minimum of four (4) years of related experience preferred. Fundamental knowledge of the operating characteristics of electron microscopes, vacuum systems and data storage required. Experience with SEM / STEM operation and imaging required. Experience with sample preparation for STEM (fixation, dehydration, embedding, sectioning and staining) required. Experience with sample preparation for SEM (fixation, dehydration, coating) required. Hands-on experience with the techniques of sample preparation for EM including two or more of the following: chemical and/or cryofixation and embedding of cells and tissues, ultrathin sectioning of embedded or rapidly frozen samples, immuno-gold labeling, negative staining, rotary shadowing and metal replica preparation, freeze-etching/freeze fracture, or critical point drying and metal coating for SEM required. Computer literacy including word processing, database, spreadsheet and presentation software preferred. Strong communications skills, both oral and written required. Excellent analytical, organizational, interpersonal and time management skills required. Physical Demands: Frequent sitting and standing; occasional walking and bending; occasional lifting of materials up to 45 pounds for distances to 10 feet. Responsiveness to auditory alarms and communication devices including: telephones, beepers, fire alarms, mechanical failure alarms. Visual acuity and color vision acceptable for performing duties of this position. Sufficient mobility to access equipment. Work Environment: Exposure to minimal to moderate but constant noise levels. Repetitive hand motions. Microscopic work contributing to eye strain and back fatigue. Daily functions may include incidental exposure to hazards associated with: Automation: close proximity to moving mechanical parts. Chemicals: (reagents, carcinogens, radioactive materials, corrosives, flammables and fumes) Specimens, microorganisms, surgical equipment and sharps.
