Job Overview:
SoCal Gas is looking for an advanced Technician/Specialist with an aptitude on performing a wide range of high level skilled work, independently or as a crew member, related to the operation and maintenance of all types of hydraulic, pneumatic, electric, and electronic control instruments and telemetering equipment in the transmission and underground storage system. Current openings are at Newberry Station. This is a DOT position.

Position Objective:
Successful candidates will be responsible for following established safety procedures and Company guidelines to Program, install, calibrate and repair hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, digital, and electronic devices used for automatic control and for telemetric indication and control.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
May provide work direction to crew members to other employees and provides general feedback to supervision as required. Operates and directs others to operate facilities to achieve and maintain optimum efficiency. Assembles, installs, repairs, adjusts and maintains instruments which record, indicate, or control temperature, pressure, flow, liquid level, gas quality, rotating equipment speed, etc. Assists with the installation and troubleshooting of data communication systems. Configures, modifies and uploads commercial manufacturers' remote transmitting unit (RTU) programs. On some assignments develops new programmable logic controller (PLC) programs. Changes set points, modifies local data tags. Develops and modifies new/existing HMI and local SCADA screens, data bases, trends and alarms. Modifies local operating screen displays. Performs shop work associated with development, fabrication and testing of new instrumentation equipment. Inspects and operates new equipment installations. Installs and maintains emissions control equipment and continuous emissions monitoring systems (CEMS). Installs, maintains and repairs electronic engine control systems such as air/fuel ratio controls and electronic governors. Works with Station Maintenance Specialists and technical staff members to troubleshoot and correct engine performance and emissions issues. Uses portable emissions test equipment to determine emissions levels for internal combustion equipment.

Installs and maintains electronic and other control equipment associated with gas and fluid production, dehydration, fluid separation oil stabilization, tank farm, flares, fluid disposal and other related storage field equipment. Diagnoses and repairs malfunctions related to instrumentation and telemetric systems using factory manuals and/or prescribed methods. Bypasses station equipment for preventative maintenance or repair and returns it to operation without disrupting flow in the gas system. Manually operates station valves, regulators and control equipment to properly route gas and maintain pipeline pressure within allowable limits. When necessary, obtains approval of appropriate supervision. Installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and performs repairs at Transmission customer meter sites (e. g., UEGs, cogens, large non-core, etc.). Prepares appropriate records, notifying supervisor of any unusual patterns. Works from engineering and construction drawings or sketches. Performs measurement Specialist duties, as needed. Performs various other equivalent and lower grade functions

Minimum Qualifications:
Successful candidates must possess a valid California driver's license and a safe driving record.
Must pass a pre-qualification examination. Intermediate computer skills required. Must have 5 years of experience as a Measurement Specialist, Station Operations Specialist, or Station Maintenance Specialist, or equivalent in a related industry.
Must have knowledge and understanding of Analog and Digital Instrumentation; Smart Transmitters; Programmable Logic Controllers; Principles of Operation. Must demonstrate understanding of electricity and electronic, hydraulic and pneumatic schematics, concepts, and theories including the following: elementary electricity, including concepts of voltage, current, resistance, power, Ohm's Law, and common electrical units.
Must demonstrate understanding of gas quality devices (i.e., dew point monitors, O2 monitors, H2S monitors, NH3 monitors, etc.). Must have basic understanding of emissions controls and emissions testing equipment.
Must pass a structured interview. Must pass formal Measurement and Instrument Specialists training for this classification.
Must pass a pre-qualification examination: Advanced Mechanical Test Battery-Technical/Specialist. Physical Abilities test requirement: Level C
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in all areas of Transmission and Storage operations, i.e, pipeline, compressor stations, underground storage fields. Understanding of the electronic control devices (i. e., RTU's, PLC's, Digis, etc.) used by the Company. Understanding of data communications theories and applications. Understanding of CEMS/ACEMS devices and requirements. Understanding of gas chromatographs. Ability to configure, modify and upload programs associated with PLCs and HMIs. Ability to design/install new equipment and complete as built drawings. Knowledge of simple alternating-current phenomena, including a.c. impedance and resonance; knowledge of the properties and uses of electronics components, including resistors, capacitors, inductors, transformers, and semi-conductors. Ability to perform mechanical and electrical layout, construction, modification, testing, adjustment, calibration, and preventive maintenance, troubleshoot and repair of simple and complex electronics and electro-mechanical/pneumatic equipment. Ability to read and interpret precision measuring equipment. Ability to read and interpret electrical and instrumentation diagrams, specifications and manuals. Demonstrate knowledge of safety standards (e.g., energy source lock out, confined spaces, electrical standards, etc.) and national electrical code, strong computer skills.

Required to work on-call on a rotating basis.

Required to work emergency call-outs and be able to work occasional extensive hours.

Required to job site report.

Physical Demand

Medium - Frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighting up to 25 pounds with a lifting up to approximately 50 pounds, as required.
