Job Description:

Support a water plant in Fort Irwin, CA (Irwin Water Works, IWW) as an I&C technician and have a hand in transforming tomorrow.

The IWW is a state-of-the-art facility designed to treat a maximum design flow of 6.0 MGD. It consists of an Electro-Dialysis Reversal (EDR) system. It has a treatment efficiency of 99%. The reject water is further treated through several downstream processes: Microfiltration, Reverse Osmosis, lime softening, Mechanical evaporator. The final product is chlorinated with sodium hypochlorite before delivery to the water distribution system.

This position reports directly to the IWW manager.

General Statement

Performs the inspection, maintenance and repair for all equipment control circuits including electrical, electronic and pneumatic systems and telemetry systems, supervisory control and data acquisition systems and signal devices

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Interprets and works from blueprints, drawings, sketches, plans and technical documents

Performs the calibration and repair of all flow metering devices

  • Recommends control system modifications with documented justification that will result in standard utilization of parts and materials and will reduce operating and repair costs
  • Establishes and enforces uniform electrical repair safety procedures at all plant sites
  • Makes modifications to as-built electrical drawings based on system modifications and updates all electrical component equipment history files
  • Establishes and maintains scheduled control system maintenance and calibration programs for plant equipment
  • Directs the work of electrical subcontractors and all outside control system repair work
  • Maintains record keeping associated with all electrical repairs and modifications
  • Follows oral and written instructions
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative relationship with those contacted during the course

of work

  • Performs other duties as required
  • Regularly inspects the working condition and maintains the cleanliness of equipment and surrounding areas
  • Assist in coordinating job activities with other team members
  • Assist with review of capital improvement project studies, designs and contract drawings.
  • Forecast material and equipment needs
  • Provides on-the-job training to less experienced employees

Basic Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Six years-experience with knowledge of the maintenance, repair and calibration of electrical control systems
  • Possess a valid California drivers license
  • Knowledge of computer software including but not limited to Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel
  • Possess or able to obtain a T2 water operator certification from the State of California within two (2) years of hire.
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Three years-experience in a Lead position as an Industrial and Control Technician in a water/wastewater facility
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, equipment and instruments used in the maintenance, repair and calibration of electrical and electronic control systems including:
  • Distributed Control Systems (DCS)
  • Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) or PC based controls
  • Graphics human machine interface (HMI) or similar IO devices
  • Instrumentation communication networks (Ethernet, DeviceNet, ControlNet, Profibus) or similar
  • Electrical power distribution and conduit wiring
  • Servos, drives, actuators, variable frequency drives (VFDs), valves, etc.
  • Knowledge of the principle and practices of an effective control system preventive maintenance program, safe work practices, and related state and federal laws and regulations

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

The work area can involve a working environment indoors as well as outdoors, which could cause exposure to outdoor elements; proper environmental attire will be required. Some areas can have loud noise, active machinery, high pressure fluid systems, electrical equipment, confined spaces, heights and depths, fumes, air borne particles, noxious gases, pathogens and various chemicals. The use of appropriate safety equipment will be mandatory in these areas to prevent hazardous contact.

Must be able to sit, stand, stoop, twist and bend at the waist, turn, kneel, squat, raise arms above shoulder height, grasp, reach, perform repetitive hand movements and fine coordination when preparing reports and using a computer keyboard, have vision sufficient to read computer screens, printed documents and operate office equipment; must be able to judge color end-point changes (not be color blind), have hearing in the normal range with or without correction and able to hear timers ring. Must be free of respiratory problems of a nature that could be aggravated by exposure to chemical fumes found in a laboratory environment. In an 8-hour shift must be able to transport self across the facility, ascend and descend stair steps, lift objects up to 45 pounds from floor level to waist height, wear and use respiratory protection and other appropriate safety equipment.
