Job Description:

The R&D Manager - Codes and Compliance, reporting into the R&D Director for Core Product Innovation, serves as a key member of the "core products" team that will drive profitable growth of James Hardie's core business in North America. Has responsibilities which encompass accredited product testing, inspection, engineering analysis, and certifications, along with shaping building codes and standards. This position is expected to work closely with all R&D product development teams, technology development teams, and corporate product management teams, during and throughout the James Hardie innovation process (concept feasibility through implementation). This position also provides technical support in the form of design advice, product / system performance, and guidance to both internal and external customers relating to product application and use.
Position Responsibilities
New Product Innovation: serve as part of a cross functional team including product management, product development, application engineering, sales, marketing, quality, manufacturing, and supply chain to advance revenue growth at James Hardie through innovation.

  • New product engineering and testing:
    • Project planning on all new product innovation projects related to Test, Inspection, and Certification
    • Collaborate with Application Engineering and Product Development to determine the ideal system performance to meet market needs (e.g., wind loads, water resistance detailing, fire protection)
    • Initiate and Manage accredited product testing
    • New product certifications:
      • Initiate new certifications with appropriate agencies, create project scope of work
      • Drive for results according to timelines agreed regarding listings, evaluations, and certifications (example agencies: ICC-ES, Texas Department of Insurance, HUD, Miami-Dade County, State of Florida Product Approval, CCMC, CAL FIRE, UL Environment, National Green Building Standards, Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval)
      • Support Sales: Collaborate with marketing to support value propositions through testing that expands or opens markets for existing products
        Core Business Support: oversee and manage change to all existing product certifications, third party factory inspections, and product testing within the core North American business.
        • Manage change to approvals based on new regulations, new factories coming online, new marketing, and process optimization projects
        • Ensure listing, certifications, and evaluation reports remain current to the latest building regulations
        • Collaborate with our product management team to revise or expand reports to open new opportunities (manage testing and associated engineering analysis as needed)
        • Communicate and manage expectations with external officials ensuring that regulatory agencies are satisfied
          Codes and Standards: act as the voice of James Hardie Building Products to shape standards and building codes in a way to enable strategic market initiatives and advance the core business.
          • Shape standards (e.g., ASTM, ANSI, ULC), acceptance criteria (e.g., ICC-ES), and building codes:
            • Through technical committee leadership
            • Proactive surveillance
            • Strategic networking
            • Inform and prepare the business for upcoming regulatory trends
            • Shape James Hardie's involvement in trade associations (e.g., NTCA, TCNA, NAHB) to manage risk and enable strategic initiatives
              Position Requirements
              Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
              • Excellent organizational skills thoroughness and attention to detail is critical
              • Good technical writing skills and the ability to read and comprehend technical documents
              • Ability to collaborate with a wide range of professionals including Plant Operators, Engineers, Research and Development staff Sales & Marketing, upper-level management
              • Very good communication skills, ability to organize data into written reports and oral presentations
              • Ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision after goals are defined
              • Ability to negotiate contracts and gain compliance
              • Knowledge of mechanical connections and associated engineering principles
              • Ability to strategize long term
              • Ability to solve a wide range of difficult problems in imaginative and practical ways and evaluate alternative solutions that may require coordination across multiple teams
              • Ability to assess and redirect engineering efforts in a continually changing environment
              • Ability to work on technical problems of diverse scope and complexity and foresee and evaluate various outcomes
                For successful performance in this position, the incumbent will need to possess the following experience/skills, education:
                • 10 years of experience within building products manufacturing
                • Minimum of 5 years of experience in product testing, product evaluation / certification, and quality systems
                • Minimum of 5 years of experience in standards development and code development
                • B.S. (or higher) in Engineering (Civil or Mechanical), Architecture, Science, or a related technical field. Degree must be from an accredited institution.
                • Preferred but not required:
                  • Professional License (PE, RA)
                  • MBA
